Benevolent Fund

The Australian Anglo Indian Association
Benevolent Fund (Inc)

BACKGROUND

One of the objects of the Australian Anglo Indian Association (Association) is to ' provide and promote welfare activities to people both within and outside Australia'. Because of the various other activities of the Association which competed for attention with welfare, and the need to have a separate arm to obtain income tax exemption, the Australian Anglo Indian Association Benevolent Fund (Inc) was incorporated in May 1995.

OBJECTS

The objects of the Fund are:
  • To provide help and support to those in need
  • The relief of poverty, sickness, suffering, distress, misfortune, destitution or helplessness among Anglo-Indians without discrimination.
  • To donate to such other charitable organisations that the management committee may determine from time to time.
  • To seek public contributions and engage in other activities that enable the Fund to maintain its benevolent objectives.
  • To provide aid directly to those in need

MEMBERSHIP

All financial members of the Association automatically qualify for membership of the Fund. Every member of the Association is therefore a member of the Fund and plays an important part in the work of the fund. The role of a member is not only to make personal donations or the support of the fund raising activities, but in genuine concern for the needs of Anglo-Indians everywhere.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE

The affairs of the Fund are managed exclusively by the Management Committee consisting of:
  • The President
  • The Secretary
  • The Treasurer
  • Four other persons
There is an important link between the Management Committee of the Fund and the Executive Committee of the Association, in that the President of the Fund is the Welfare Convenor, who ensures communication and information of all business conducted by the Fund to the Executive Committee.

MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AND SOME ACCOMPLISHMENTS

One of the first tasks the Committee set itself was the establishment of a Mission Statement so that a reminder of the objects of the Fund were always before them. The final statement reads as follows:
'To primarily assist (through financial and moral support) in the alleviation of poverty and suffering of those in need and specifically to Anglo-Indians, both in the Indian sub-continent and in Australia, and to seek contributions to the resources of the Fund for these purposes.'
The next major task accomplished was to establish a funding criteria so that clear defined guidelines were available when assessing applications for funding.

President:                Denzil Bruce

Secretary:                Joy Gasper

Treasurer:                Barry Aldrich

Committee Members: Liz Clarence, Linda D'Cruz, Errol D'Rozario and Alberta Janes.

RECENT DEVELOPMENTS

The Benevolent Fund now accepts applications for assistance from individuals in addition to organisations. This was felt necessary to enable assistance to be provided at the grass roots and to help those individuals who were not members of any organisation. The change has resulted in many more applications being received and processed.
